About Great Horned Owls
These Great Horned Owls, known for adapting nests built by other birds, returned for a successful season in 2023-2024, laying an egg on January 2, 2024. Courting male owls perform impressive displays and bring food to the female, with most pairs mating for life. Known for their distinctive size, females typically weigh around 3.5 pounds, larger than their male counterparts.
With the ability to rotate their heads 270 degrees, these owls are powerful hunters. They lay between 1-4 eggs per year, with incubation lasting about 33 days. The owlets start exploring nearby branches around five weeks and learn to fly by 9-10 weeks, cared for by both parents for months. Their diet is diverse, from small mammals to birds and, occasionally, reptiles and insects.
