Dataw Island, located near Beaufort, South Carolina, is a place where rich history and vibrant wildlife converge, offering a unique glimpse into both the past and the present.

Historical Overview of Dataw Island

Archaeological evidence indicates that indigenous peoples inhabited Dataw Island for over 10,000 years, with significant activity from Woodland period communities between 1500 BC and 1000 AD.  European exploration began in the 16th century, with the Spanish discovering the island in 1514. Over the next two centuries, control of the island shifted among Spanish, French, and English forces.

In 1682, Scottish trader Caleb Westbrook established a trading post on the island. By 1783, William Sams acquired the island, transforming it into a prosperous Sea Island cotton plantation. The plantation era left behind significant structures, including the Sams Plantation Ruins, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Bald Eagles on Dataw Island
