Question 1

What am I watching here?

Accepted Answer

A Bald Eagle nest in the Dulles Greenway Wetlands, a private preserve in Leesburg, Virginia, offering a natural view of nesting life from courtship to fledging.

Question 2

When is the best time of year to see nesting activity?

Accepted Answer

Activity often ramps up in late fall and winter with nest work and egg laying; hatching is usually late winter to early spring, with branching and first flights in late spring into summer.

Question 3

Why is the nest so big?

Accepted Answer

Bald Eagles reuse and add to the same nest for years, so it can grow massive—this one has been used for many seasons and may approach a ton in weight.

Question 4

What behaviors should I watch for during the season?

Accepted Answer

Look for stick deliveries and soft lining, incubation exchanges, careful brooding, frequent prey drop-offs, wing-stretching, branching, and first flights.

Question 5

What do the eagles here typically eat?

Accepted Answer

They commonly bring fish and small mammals from the nearby creek and surrounding wetland habitats.

Question 6

Where exactly is this nest situated?

Accepted Answer

The nest is in an oak roughly 40 feet up beside a small creek within the Dulles Greenway Wetlands in Leesburg, Virginia.

Question 7

How long have eagles used this nest site?

Accepted Answer

Question 8

Why choose a nest site near water?

Accepted Answer

Waterways provide reliable food and perching, plus clear flight paths to and from the nest.

Question 9

When do eaglets branch and fledge here?

Accepted Answer

After rapid spring growth, you’ll often see branching in late spring, followed by first flights heading into early summer.

Question 10

Do both parents share the work?

Accepted Answer

Yes—both adults typically share incubation and chick-rearing, swapping duties and bringing food.

Question 11

What other wildlife might appear?

Winter can offer crisp, clear nest views; spring brings fresh greenery and frequent feedings; summer adds humid afternoons and storms; fall features calmer days and colorful foliage.

Question 13

How can I tell adults from younger eagles?

Accepted Answer

Adults show bright white heads and tails; younger birds are mottled brown and gain full adult plumage after several years.

Question 14

Why do adults bring soft materials into the bowl?

Accepted Answer

Soft grasses and leaves cushion eggs and chicks, help regulate moisture, and keep the nest bowl tidy.

Question 15

What sounds might I hear from this site?

Accepted Answer

Expect sharp eagle calls along with ambient wetland sounds like wind, rain, and other birds.

Question 16

How many eggs do Bald Eagles usually have?

Accepted Answer

Clutches are often two eggs, and incubation is about a month, though nature can vary year to year.

Question 17

Why might the nest look empty sometimes?

Accepted Answer

Adults often perch nearby, and after fledging, young birds explore surrounding branches and return intermittently.

Question 18

What weather makes for the best viewing?

Accepted Answer

Calm mornings and clear winter days provide sharp views; after storms, watch for active repairs and fresh stick deliveries.

Accepted Answer

They maintain drainage, manage parasites, and reshape the bowl to fit growing chicks.

Question 23

Is it okay to visit the area to look for the nest?

Accepted Answer

Enjoy the livestream instead; for the eagles’ safety, avoid seeking out nest sites or sharing exact locations.
