City of Temecula Town Square

The area of Temecula was initially occupied by the Temecula Indians, with ancestry dating as early as 900 CE. It was established by a Franciscan padre as Mission Luis Rey in 1797. In 1859, the first inland Southern California post office was established in Temecula. In 1989, citizens officially voted to name the land after its original native occupants, "Temecula".
