The railway departs every 40 minutes until 5:20 pm, traveling 9 miles to the summit of Pikes Peak. This three-hour round trip offers an unforgettable experience, ascending to an altitude of 14,115 feet. Passengers will enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of the mountain.
The Cog Railway is the world's highest and longest cog railroad, as well as the highest railroad in the U.S. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway provides one of the most beautiful and unique experiences in the country. Recent renovations include a new snowblower that effortlessly clears 14-foot tall snow drifts, allowing passengers to reach the summit even in winter.
The history of this railway began with a mule! In the late 1880s, Zalmon Simmons, a tourist and the founder of Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company, visited the Pikes Peak region. He was there to inspect an invention for insulating telegraph wires running to the Army Signal Station on the summit. Simmons made the two-day, 13.5-mile journey to the top on a mule, the only mode of transportation available at the time. He believed the public should experience the spectacular views in comfort. Inspired by the hotel owner's suggestion of a railway, Simmons founded the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company in 1889.
