History of Edgartown Harbor and the Chappaquiddick Ferry

Edgartown is one of the oldest communities on Martha's Vineyard. Originally known as Great Harbor, the settlement dates to the 1600s and became an important maritime center. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Edgartown developed into a prosperous whaling port, with ships traveling on long voyages across the world's oceans.

The town's maritime wealth is still reflected in its historic architecture. Elegant homes built for whaling captains line the streets near the harbor, while the waterfront continues to serve as a gathering place for residents, boaters, and visitors. The nearby Memorial Wharf and surrounding historic district are reminders of Edgartown's longstanding relationship with the sea.

The Chappaquiddick Ferry, often called the Chappy Ferry, has long provided an essential connection between Edgartown and Chappaquiddick Island. Because the two communities are separated by a narrow channel, the ferry offers a convenient way for residents and visitors to cross with vehicles, bicycles, or on foot.

Unlike larger ferries that connect Martha's Vineyard with mainland Massachusetts, the Chappy Ferry makes a very short crossing. Its distinctive small vessels are a familiar part of everyday life in Edgartown, carrying people back and forth throughout the day.

The live camera is positioned at the Old Sculpin Gallery, a historic waterfront building dating to 1840. Before becoming an art gallery, the structure served a variety of maritime and commercial purposes, including a sail loft, grain storage space, and boatbuilding workshop.

One of the building's best known occupants was Manuel Swartz Roberts, a talented local boatbuilder nicknamed Old Sculpin. Roberts specialized in traditional wooden catboats and built approximately 200 during his career. His workshop became a familiar gathering place along the Edgartown waterfront.

In 1954, the building became home to the Martha's Vineyard Art Association. Today, the Old Sculpin Gallery continues to celebrate island artists and preserve an important piece of Edgartown's maritime and artistic heritage.
